The Chilean Society of Marine Sciences (SCHCM), Its mission is to promote the development of knowledge through scientific and technological research, of the training of new researchers, dissemination of knowledge and observation of the marine environment for scientific development, social and cultural of Chile. Thus, year after year the Congress of Marine Sciences is held, that brings together academics, researchers, experts and students, both national and international, in the most outstanding areas of Marine Sciences. This instance, that has become a tradition in our country, has been held uninterruptedly for the past 39 years, becoming the main platform to encourage the development of scientific knowledge, the training of new researchers and the dissemination of advances in the development of Marine Sciences in Chile and the world.

As is usual, every year, the Chilean Society of Marine Sciences, assigns the organization of this event to institutions in the country that carry out relevant research activities in this area. It is like this, as the "XL Congress of Marine Sciences", In the first instance, would take place in the city of Punta Arenas, Chile, of 25 al 29 of May 2020, in commemoration of the 500 years of the passage of Hernando de Magallanes, through the bio-oceanic channel that bears his name, historical milestone of navigation between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. Nevertheless, This should have been suspended due to the pandemic that affects us.

The Directory of the Chilean Society of Marine Sciences, in conjunction with the Organizing Committee of the XL Congress of Marine Sciences – University of Magallanes, they decided to schedule it, Between the days 24 Y 28 May 2021, in telematic mode. The motto of the XL Congress of Marine Sciences is "Protecting the Future of the Southern Ecosystems", thus recognizing the innumerable scientific expeditions through this bio-oceanic corridor, that have allowed the generation of important knowledge about southern marine ecosystems.

The academic program that has been established will provide each and every participant the opportunity to update their scientific knowledge, while contributing to the training of young and new scientific researchers, as well as the dissemination of the latest advances in the development of Sea Sciences in Chile, showing that the physical distance, does not prevent the sharing of scientific knowledge in the area of ​​Marine Sciences, on an international level.
